my second favorite lead holder of all time

There is one pencil I absolutely cannot live without: my Staedtler Mars 780 2mm Lead Holder. I’ve tried many many other mechanical pencils, regular pencils and lead holders and nothing has ever come close. Until now.

Now there are two pencils I can’t live without.

I was first attracted to the Prime Timber’s beauty and light weight. Admittedly, I still think the Staedtlers write better and come with a superior sharpener, but they aren’t nearly as nice to look at. Especially since the Prime Timber’s come in eight unique barrel colors made in Japan with California incense cedar.

These beauties run about $14.50 and come with 2mm B grade lead and a small, thin pencil sharpener. The sharpener is perfect for travel because it closes securely and never leaves behind any lead dust. I can’t say the same about my Staedtler Mars sharpener— which even though creates a longer, sharper point—never fails to get dust everywhere.

pro tip

I actually don’t like B grade lead and replace it with harder 2H grade lead. The harder lead allows for lighter, finer lines and needs to be sharpened much less frequently than the softer B lead. But it’s purely a matter of preference. Sometimes I leave B in one of my Prime Timbers (of course I have more than one) to use for shading or making bolder marks.

If you want to replace your B lead, I recommend this 12-pack from Staedtler Mars. I also love this Staedtler lead sharpener, but you have to place the lead into the Staedtler lead holder in order to use it. Whenever I do lettering or illustration work, I always sharpen with a Staedtler for the finest point.
